PERCEIVED DETERMINANTS OF EMOTIONAL SEPARATION AMONG MARRIED SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN OGBOMOSO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT, OYO STATE

Abstract

Marriage, envisioned as a source of comfort and strong bonding, sometimes falls short of expectations, leading to emotional separation. The study examined perceived determinants of emotional separation among married Secondary Schools teachers in Ogbomoso South Local Government, Oyo State. The objectives of the study were to assess: i) unresolved issues ii) different priorities and iii) infidelity as perceived determinants of emotional separation among married Secondary Schools teachers in Ogbomoso South Local Government, Oyo State. Descriptive research design of survey type was employed for the study. Through purposive and convenient sampling techniques, a sample size of one hundred and ninety-two (192) respondents were selected to form the sample size for the study. The instrument for data collection was a researcher’s designed closed ended questionnaire of four Likert rating scale validated and tested for reliability. A reliability co-efficient of 0.81 was obtained through test re-test method. Data was collected by the researcher and with the support of four trained research assistants. Three research questions were raised and answered through descriptive statistics of percentage while the three postulated hypotheses were tested using inferential statistics of Chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The study concluded that unresolved issues, different priorities and infidelity were perceived determinants of emotional separation among married Secondary Schools teachers in Ogbomoso South Local Government, Oyo State. The study therefore recommended that married individuals should always embrace peaceful resolution in all issues so as to promote their emotional well-being. Also, harmonization of goals, core values and ambitions should be promoted in marriage to achieve a strong emotional connection between spouses.
