REPOSITIONING HEALTHCARE SERVICES THROUGH UTILIZATION OF NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME SERVICES AMONG FEDERAL TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS STAFF OF NORTH-WEST ZONE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study Repositioning Healthcare Services through Utilization National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) services among Federal Tertiary Institutions Staff of North-West Zone, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of the study, two (2) research questions and two (2) hypotheses were formulated. Descriptive design of survey type was used for the study. The population of the study was 70,528 staff from Federal Tertiary Institutions of North-West Zone, Nigeria as at 2023. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 600 respondents from nine (9) tertiary institutions (T.Is) from the study area which include; 3 universities, 3 federal colleges of education and 3 federal polytechnics. A researcher’s developed questionnaire which was designed in line with four points modified likert scoring scale was used as instrument for data collection. Face and content validity of the instrument was determined using split half method after which Spearman Brown Formula was used coefficient of 0.73 was obtained as reliability. Frequency count and percentages were used to organize and describe the demographic information of the respondents, One-way ANOVA was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The data from 539 copies of the questionnaire that were duly completed and returned were used for analysis. The result indicated that; There is no significant difference in the utilization of NHIS services based on institution type F (2, 536) =1.134, (P>0.05); There is significant difference in the utilization of NHIS services based on educational qualifications F (2, 538) = 1.134, (P>0.05). Based on the findings of this study it was recommended that T.Is management should liaise with NHIS to ensure delivery of good services so as to make staff sustain their utilization of NHIS services in north-west zone, Nigeria. Staff with low academic qualifications (NCE/ND) should be given more awareness campaign in order to utilize the NHIS services in T.Is in North-West Zone, Nigeria.
